Nemesis, the Goddess of Righteous Anger, cursed Narcissus to fall in love with himself when he would no return the love of the nymph named Echo. Narcissus saw his reflection in a pond and stayed there, staring at himself, trapped until one day he wanted so badly to free himself that he killed himself on that spot. His body was taken to the Underworld and in its place on the Earth was the flower named for him. "So may he himself love, and not gain the thing he loves!"
